Ryan Leaf has always been remarkably candid about his struggles in the NFL and subsequent battles with addiction.
Fortunately, after grappling with various substance abuse issues and legal entanglements, Leaf has now been sober for over a decade.
The former No. 2 overall draft pick marked his 12-year milestone of sobriety on X/Twitter today.
“12 years ago today I woke up on the floor of a jail cell…with no hope or conceivable idea of what the future held! There was no glimpse of this life, no love, no career, no prospects, no family, no recovery,” Leaf shared. “You can’t rewrite the past, but you can seize the present and rewrite the future! There is Hope! #soberlife #12Years #PartnersInCrime.”

Leaf’s transparency throughout the years has been admirable. He’s unafraid to offer advice and share his life experiences with those in need. Moreover, he remains unfazed by detractors, such as the individual who recently questioned whether his newborn daughter knew about his NFL struggles.
“She’s 14 weeks old; she’ll learn,” Leaf responded. “There are individuals like you everywhere, eager to broadcast it from the shadows. I reckon discussing being a recovering addict and seven-time convicted felon may pose a greater challenge, but we persist!”
Kudos to Ryan. Here’s to celebrating his sobriety anniversary and wishing him many more years of success on this journey.
