Opinions are divided on whether Donald Trump’s $400 sneakers will sway Black voters in his favor.
TMZ Sports caught up with former NBA star Lou Williams at LAX, who weighed in on FOX News host Raymond Arroyo’s suggestion that Trump’s footwear could earn him political support within the Black community.
Trump recently introduced his “Never Surrender” gold high tops, retailing at $399, which garnered a mixed reaction. Some pairs even fetched considerably higher prices. However, Williams, a seasoned NBA player with 17 seasons under his belt before retiring in 2023, disputes the idea that this footwear venture would sway votes.
In Williams’ view, attempting to win over voters with pricey sneakers reflects a misunderstanding and underestimation of the intelligence of the Black community.
“If that’s your intention, I think you’re in the wrong place and I think you’re a little misled on thinking how intelligent we are to see this coming a mile away,” Williams expressed.
Moreover, Williams isn’t impressed with the sneakers themselves, deeming them unremarkable and not worthy of being considered collectibles, except perhaps by Hypebeasts.
Rather than focusing on material possessions, Williams believes that Trump, his supporters, and all Americans should prioritize addressing the country’s pressing issues.
“We talking about sneakers opposed to the direction that our country is gonna live in and where our kids and how our children are gonna grow up in this world and the leadership that follows that,” Williams emphasized.
As the presidential election approaches on November 5, 2024, discussions surrounding political strategies and priorities continue to evolve.
