NBA legend John Stockton has filed a declaration in federal court outlining his reasons for opposing vaccines and COVID-19 restrictions.
However, these reasons seem to contradict scientific consensus and appear rooted in personal anecdotes or misunderstandings.
In his declaration submitted on Tuesday, the 62-year-old Stockton mentioned his past experiences with the flu, including contracting it despite receiving the flu vaccine. He also mentioned harm to one of his children from vaccines, though he did not provide details.
Additionally, he cited advice from a chiropractor advising against vaccinating his children.
Stockton’s declaration was filed in support of his lawsuit against Washington state officials regarding COVID-19 misinformation from doctors. The lawsuit alleges violations of free speech rights for doctors who oppose the mainstream COVID-19 narrative.
Stockton, a Hall of Famer in basketball, highlighted his upbringing where trust in doctors was paramount, but he indicated a shift in his views over time. He mentioned his NBA career and interactions with medical professionals, including a chiropractor associated with his team, the Utah Jazz.

Despite previously receiving the flu vaccine during his NBA career, Stockton now expresses skepticism towards vaccines and COVID restrictions. His recent actions include having his season tickets suspended at Gonzaga University for refusing to wear a mask during games amid the pandemic.
In a related interview, Stockton identified the chiropractor who influenced him as Craig Buhler, who had worked with the Utah Jazz. Stockton had previously shown support for Buhler’s wife in a letter to a federal judge before she was sentenced for her involvement in the U.S. Capitol riot in 2021.
