During yesterday’s Opening Ceremony for the Paris Olympics, a controversial performance by a group of drag queens that parodied “The Last Supper” drew significant backlash, especially from Christian communities.
Former NFL quarterback Luke McCown was among those who voiced their discontent on X/Twitter, expressing his displeasure with the segment.
“Won’t repost the filth from the Olympics.. Disappointed but not surprised…not sure why it’s a part of the event,” McCown wrote, before elaborating on his views about the importance of Jesus’ resurrection.
“Also…. Folks c’mon stop reposting it.. find a way to turn the attention from the filth that mocked Jesus to Jesus himself,” he added in a follow-up tweet. “Lots of Christians talking about it right now.. here’s the chance… tell someone what the Last Supper was really about and what it really led to.”

The official Olympics X/Twitter account described the drag queen segment as an “interpretation of the Greek God Dionysus makes us aware of the absurdity of violence between human beings,” attempting to frame it within a broader artistic context.
McCown is not alone in his condemnation. Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker also shared his criticism on social media, and another former quarterback, Brady Quinn, retweeted McCown’s post, echoing his sentiments.
Luke McCown, the younger brother of fellow NFL quarterback Josh McCown, played 13 years in the league, with stints at the New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and Cleveland Browns. He concluded his career with 2,370 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and 15 interceptions over 62 games, including 10 starts.
The incident has sparked a larger conversation about the intersection of art, religion, and public events, with many calling for respect and sensitivity towards religious beliefs in such high-profile settings. As the debate continues, it highlights the diverse and often conflicting perspectives that global events like the Olympics bring to the forefront.
