Former Los Angeles Lakers guard and head coach Byron Scott believes the Lakers don’t need to look far for their next head coach, suggesting an unconventional choice during his appearance on FS1’s “Undisputed.”
Scott proposed that LeBron James should take on the role, despite his name not appearing among the eight or nine candidates typically mentioned. “My recommendation: The next Lakers coach should be LeBron. Make him the coach,” Scott asserted.
Scott, along with host Skip Bayless, discussed the possibility of James becoming a player-coach, reminiscent of Bill Russell’s role with the Boston Celtics from 1966-69. “LeBron is already making a lot of decisions within the organization, from coaching to player choices. If he’s making those decisions, why not let him do it officially from the bench as the head coach? He could be a player-head coach, just like in the Bill Russell days,” Scott explained.

This discussion follows the Lakers’ decision to fire head coach Darvin Ham after a first-round playoff exit. Ham led the team for two seasons, achieving a record of 90-74 in the regular season and 9-12 in the playoffs.
LeBron James, who is 39 years old, has one year left on his contract with the Lakers, which includes a $51.4 million player option. He faces a deadline of June 29 to decide whether to opt in and stay with the Lakers or become an unrestricted free agent.
