A career in football can often be brief.
At just 28 years old, former Dallas Cowboys star Leighton Vander Esch has announced his retirement from the National Football League. The decision comes after Vander Esch battled through significant injuries during his six-year career.
ESPN NFL insider Todd Archer broke the news on Monday afternoon, revealing that Vander Esch’s retirement was prompted by a neck injury suffered last season. Following his release by the Cowboys last week, Vander Esch made the decision official.

During his tenure with the Cowboys, Vander Esch showcased his talent as a standout linebacker when he was able to stay healthy. Unfortunately, recurring injuries hampered his ability to consistently take the field.
Vander Esch’s retirement adds to a series of changes for the Cowboys as they navigate the offseason. Despite securing the NFC East title, Dallas faced a disappointing early exit from the playoffs with a loss to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round.
As free agency unfolds, the Cowboys have been active in both signings and departures, including the loss of Tyron Smith to the New York Jets, further reshaping the team’s roster for the upcoming season.
