During Thursday’s match, Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, experienced a peculiar outburst that grabbed attention.
He directed his frustration towards two spectators who had failed to take their seats promptly while he was preparing to serve.
This incident unfolded during the fourth set of his second-round match against Christopher O’Connell. Medvedev’s temper flared as two female fans attempted to return to their seats with beers in hand, disrupting his concentration. He erupted, shouting, “Can you shut up?” and “Are you stupid or what?” at the fans. In response, one of the fans playfully blew Medvedev a kiss.

The rest of the spectators in the stands did not appreciate Medvedev’s outburst and expressed their disapproval with boos as he argued with the chair umpire about the disruption caused by the two fans.
Medvedev was already not a crowd favorite at the event due to a previous incident in 2019 when he threw his racket in the direction of the umpire and made an offensive gesture towards the audience. This recent episode certainly did not improve his image.
While the two fans may have technically been at fault, Medvedev’s excessive reaction didn’t seem to win him any sympathy on the internet.
It remains to be seen how Medvedev will be received during his third-round match against Sebastian Baez on Saturday.
