It appears that Trey Lance’s time with the San Francisco 49ers may be nearing its end.
Despite being the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 draft, Lance lost the backup quarterback role to Sam Darnold during the summer.
With Brock Purdy solidified as the team’s starter for the upcoming season, Lance would benefit from pursuing opportunities elsewhere to revitalize his career. Though there are no imminent deals on the table, oddsmakers have already identified the Atlanta Falcons (+300) as the frontrunners to acquire Lance.
The Minnesota Vikings (+350) are also considered contenders. Additionally, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Rams, and Washington Commanders round out the top five potential landing spots, according to NBC Sports Bet.

Regarding what the 49ers could expect in return for Lance in a trade, NFL insider Jordan Schultz suggests that a Day 3 pick (Rounds 4-7) is the most likely outcome.
Schultz tweeted that while some believe Lance’s value could be higher, many feel that an early Day 3 pick would be appropriate, emphasizing that he is a talented player who should not be given away without a fair return.
“Have spoken with several NFL executives about Trey Lance’s potential value: Sense is an early Day 3 pick is probably about right, although higher is feasible,” Schultz tweeted Thursday. “One assistant GM noted he wasn’t convinced the #49ers pull the trigger unless they received more. ‘He’s too talented to just give away.'”
Lance began the 2021 season as San Francisco’s starting quarterback but unfortunately suffered a season-ending injury early on.
Jimmy Garoppolo replaced him, but when Garoppolo also got injured towards the end of the year, Purdy took the reins and established himself as the team’s leader at the quarterback position.
