Jamal Murray displayed visible frustration during the Denver Nuggets’ significant defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night.
In a moment of contention in the second quarter, Murray tossed a heat pack onto the court during live play. On Tuesday morning’s episode of “Get Up,” analysts Jay Williams and Tim Legler concurred that such behavior warrants a suspension.
Williams labeled the action as immature, while Legler highlighted the potential danger, noting the serious injury risk if players like Karl-Anthony Towns or even one of Murray’s teammates had stepped on the heat pack.
Adding to the controversy, Murray was also seen throwing a towel, which, though it landed without incident at a referee’s feet, compounded concerns about his conduct. This sequence of events led to speculation about whether Murray was targeting the referee or simply venting his frustrations irresponsibly.
The incidents went unnoticed by the referees, a point that Timberwolves coach Chris Finch emphasized as both inexcusable and dangerous during his postgame press conference. Finch remarked, “It’s inexcusable and dangerous. And I’m sure it was just a mistake and an oversight by the officials, but we certainly can’t allow that to happen.”

Drawing a comparison, if a fan had thrown something onto the court, immediate ejection would follow, irrespective of whether the referees noticed. This standard seemed inconsistent earlier in the game when Nuggets coach Mike Malone intensely confronted referee Dedric Taylor without repercussions.
Reflecting on a similar situation, Dewayne Dedmon was ejected last season for throwing a massage gun onto the court, which led to a league-imposed suspension. In contrast, Murray did not receive as much as a technical foul for his actions, setting a concerning precedent.
Given the circumstances and the nature of the infractions, a suspension for Murray seems straightforward. His actions, unpenalized during the game, now require the NBA’s intervention to maintain the integrity of league conduct standards. The impact on the series outcome notwithstanding, it’s imperative for the league to address such behavior decisively.
