Will Kansas City Chiefs running back Isaiah Pacheco have a new counterpart in the backfield?
Fellow Chiefs running backs Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Jerick McKinnon are slated to hit free agency this offseason, which means that the Chiefs may be in the mix for another running back.

ESPN analyst Matt Bowen made the case for the Chiefs to sign star Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler.
Here’s what Bowen had to say below:
“With Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Jerick McKinnon heading to free agency, the Chiefs could sign Ekeler on a short-term deal to work in rotation with Isiah Pacheco. He would give coach Andy Reid a pass-game threat out of 21 personnel with the ability to flex from the backfield. Ekeler caught 51 passes last season with the Chargers and has 440 receptions in his career. Re-signing with the Chargers or joining the Raiders would also be good fits.”
Pacheco ran for nearly 1,000 yards despite missing three games in 2023. However, Ekeler would fit in nicely as a pass-catching complement to Pacheco as he did with Melvin Gordon when they played together on the Chargers from 2017 to 2019.
Ekeler had a bit of an injury-plagued and down year statistically in 2023, but he did lead the NFL in total offensive touchdowns in 2021 and 2022.
