Stephen Curry’s electrifying performance against the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday didn’t just stem from his usual competitive drive—it had an unexpected source of motivation. Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green revealed on his podcast that Curry’s mindset heading into the game was fueled by a unique mix of emotions, including a surprising interaction—or lack thereof—with former teammate Klay Thompson.
In the latest episode of The Draymond Green Show, Green shared how he took it upon himself to ensure Curry was mentally locked in before tip-off. Knowing the game carried added significance as it marked Thompson’s first time back in the Bay Area since joining the Mavericks in July, Green decided to stir things up.
“I texted Steph before the game to check on him,” Green explained. “I wanted to make sure he was locked in emotionally, not just physically. As soon as I sent the text, Steph called me right away. I could tell he was fired up.”
According to Green, Curry had already been focused on preparing for the game, even opting out of a pregame speaking engagement to avoid distractions. However, what really pushed him over the edge was a conversation with Thompson—or, more accurately, the lack of one. Curry had attempted to reach out to Thompson to discuss a few things but was met with radio silence.
“So by the time Steph showed up for the game, he was pissed,” Green said, laughing. “He told me he tried to connect with Klay about something, and Klay ghosted him. Just didn’t reply. That’s all Steph needed to take it personally. He’s like, ‘Alright, let’s go.’ And from that moment, I knew we were in for something special.”

Fueled by the slight and fully locked in, Curry delivered a masterclass on the court. He posted a staggering 37 points, six rebounds, nine assists, two blocks, and one steal in a tightly contested game that the Warriors ultimately won 120-117.
Thompson, on the other hand, also had a solid night for the Mavericks, finishing with 22 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
The game was a significant one not only for the Warriors but for fans as well, as it marked Thompson’s first time back in the Bay Area since leaving the team. The emotional stakes were high, and Curry’s performance ensured the Warriors held their ground against their former teammate.
Green, ever the pot-stirrer, took a bit of credit for lighting the fire under Curry. “Sometimes you need to poke the bear,” Green said.
“A pissed-off Steph is the best version of Steph. He wasn’t thinking about nostalgia or emotions—he was locked in, and you saw the result.”
While the game’s outcome might not have gone Thompson’s way, it left fans with an unforgettable clash and further cemented Curry’s reputation as a player who thrives when he’s got something to prove—even if it’s just being ghosted by an old friend.
