Klay Thompson became the center of attention in the NBA community earlier this week following a notable activity on social media that raised many eyebrows.
Fans were quick to notice that the veteran guard had unfollowed his long-time team, the Golden State Warriors, on Instagram.
Further stirring speculation about his future with the team, Thompson also removed every post related to the Warriors from his personal Instagram account.
This social media shakeup coincided with Thompson’s impending free agency. Having spent his entire 13-year NBA career with the Warriors after being drafted 11th overall in 2011, Thompson’s online actions prompted widespread speculation about his intentions and the state of his relationship with the team.
Addressing this surprising development, Thompson’s teammate, Draymond Green, shared his thoughts during the latest episode of his podcast. Green was initially unaware of Thompson’s social media changes but found the situation amusing rather than alarming. “I know all of you were probably looking forward to me talking about Klay unfollowing the Warriors and deleting some IG posts or something. I had no idea that happened,” Green said. He added with a laugh, “I think it’s f—ing hilarious. I think that’s comical. I know you all want somebody’s feelings to be hurt or something. It ain’t that. Ain’t never going to be that. That’s hilarious.”

Thompson, along with Green and fellow guard Steph Curry, has been a cornerstone of the Warriors’ success, contributing to four NBA championships in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022.
However, with Curry and Green secured under contracts extending through the 2025-26 season, Thompson’s future is the current topic of speculation as he approaches free agency.
Despite the uncertainty and the social media drama, the sentiment within the Warriors organization remains hopeful about retaining Thompson.
Both Thompson and the team’s leadership have expressed mutual interest in seeing him end his career with the franchise. “He’s still got good years left. We want him back,” said Warriors coach Steve Kerr in April. Kerr acknowledged the business aspects that need to be navigated but emphasized, “What Klay has meant to this franchise, as good he still is, we desperately want him back.”
As the opening of free agency on June 30 approaches, all eyes will be on Thompson as he makes a decision that will define the next chapter of his career and potentially the future trajectory of the Golden State Warriors.
