Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani hit his fifth home run of the season in an early inning of Sunday’s game against the New York Mets, setting a new record in the process.
At 29 years old, Ohtani’s 176th career home run propelled him to the top of the list for most home runs by a Japanese-born player in MLB history, overtaking Hideki Matsui’s previous record of 175 homers.
Matsui had set his mark during a 10-year stint with teams like the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels, and Tampa Bay Rays.
Ohtani’s historic third-inning home run, a 423-foot two-run blast off Mets’ pitcher Adrian Houser, secured his legacy in the record books.

Previously in 2021, Ohtani had broken another of Matsui’s records by hitting 46 home runs in a single season, the highest ever for a Japanese-born player, surpassing Matsui’s 34 homers in 2004.
Throughout his career, Ohtani has hit 171 of his 176 homers with the Angels, with a remarkable 129 of those coming in the last four seasons.
