Former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel is widely recognized for his imposing presence, a characteristic honed during his 14-season career as a linebacker in the NFL, spanning stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots, and the Kansas City Chiefs. Standing at 6’4″ and weighing 260 pounds, Vrabel epitomized the physicality expected of an NFL linebacker.
During this year’s Senior Bowl, NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic shared insights from a conversation she had with a current NFL general manager.
It was suggested that Vrabel’s imposing size and demeanor might be perceived as intimidating within organizational settings, potentially influencing the decision not to offer him a head coaching position this offseason, despite his successful tenure with the Titans.
Reports of this conversation evidently reached Vrabel, prompting him to confront Russini about the leaked information. Russini clarified the situation, explaining that her comments were misinterpreted and distorted by aggregators. She emphasized that her discussion with the general manager at the Senior Bowl focused on the unusual dynamics of the recent coaching cycle, rather than personal attributes of Vrabel.

“He called me the day after an aggregator took something I said that basically said Mike Vrabel is too fat to work,” Russini said. “What I shared on the football podcast for The Athletic was that I had dinner with a GM at the Senior Bowl and we had conversations about how bizarre this last coaching cycle was. And how crazy it was that Belichick and Vrabel didn’t have gigs.“
Over the past six seasons, Vrabel has served as the head coach of the Titans, amassing a commendable 54-45 regular-season record, including two AFC South Division Titles in 2020 and 2021.
Although Vrabel did not secure a head coaching position this offseason, his track record and coaching acumen suggest he will be in high demand next offseason, especially considering the frequent turnover in coaching positions within the NFL.
