The Detroit Lions have waived second-year safety Brandon Joseph following his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence early Saturday morning. The decision came less than 24 hours before the team’s scheduled road game against the Chicago Bears.
Joseph, 23, was taken into custody at 1:47 a.m. in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, after police officers observed him driving at an excessive speed. According to Dearborn Heights Police Department Director Paul Vanderplow, officers initiated a traffic stop, during which they noticed signs of alcohol use.
“We had reasonable suspicion and probable cause to investigate him for operating under the influence,” Vanderplow told ESPN. “He subjected himself to all required tests, and we are waiting for the results of those tests before any additional charges are even filed.”
Joseph was reportedly cooperative throughout the process and was released from custody roughly six hours later.

Lions Take Swift Action
By Saturday afternoon, the Lions announced Joseph had been waived, signaling the team’s zero-tolerance approach to off-field incidents. The organization declined to provide additional comments on the matter, focusing instead on their preparations for Sunday’s game.
Joseph joined the Lions as an undrafted free agent in 2023 after a standout collegiate career. He had appeared in 14 games this season, recording 13 tackles and defending one pass. Joseph had also spent time on the Lions’ practice squad during his two years with the team.
A Promising Career Cut Short
Joseph’s release underscores the precarious nature of an NFL career, particularly for undrafted players trying to solidify their place on a roster. Known for his work ethic and versatility in Detroit’s secondary, Joseph had shown flashes of promise but struggled to carve out a consistent role in the Lions’ defense.
The timing of the incident is especially unfortunate, as the Lions are in the midst of a playoff push and hold one of the best records in the NFC.
Legal Process Continues
While Joseph’s immediate future in the NFL is uncertain, his legal troubles remain unresolved. Vanderplow confirmed that authorities are waiting on the results of tests conducted during the arrest to determine whether formal charges will be filed.
“He was very cooperative, he was compliant,” Vanderplow said. “We are following all protocols and will proceed based on the evidence.”
A Stark Reminder
Joseph’s situation serves as a reminder of the high stakes for professional athletes, whose careers and reputations can be jeopardized by off-field decisions. For the Lions, it’s a moment that reinforces the importance of accountability and discipline within the organization.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Joseph faces significant challenges both in resolving the matter and potentially finding another opportunity in the league.
For now, his time with the Detroit Lions has come to an abrupt and unfortunate end.
