The Orlando Magic have come under criticism recently due to the revelation that the DeVos family, who are known for their right-wing views, donated $50,000 to a political action committee (PAC) supporting Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
This has raised concerns within the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), as DeSantis has a track record of controversial stances on social justice and education issues.
Specifically, the new Florida standard that teaches that Black people benefited from slavery has raised eyebrows.
The NBPA has expressed alarm at the Magic’s decision to support DeSantis.
In response to the backlash, DeSantis took to Twitter and commented, “It seems like the NBA paused their protests during our national anthem and their concerns about China to criticize my policies.”
They emphasize that while individuals have the right to express their political views through donations and statements, it is essential for team owners to consider the diverse values and perspectives of their players and staff before making contributions using the team’s earnings.
The NBPA asserts that the Magic’s donation does not reflect the support of the players.
