More 2024 NFL Draft talk involving presumed first overall pick USC quarterback Caleb Williams and the current owners of that first overall pick, the Chicago Bears.
While many have expressed their concerns regarding Caleb Williams’ draft prospects, University of Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders is concerned for a different reason.
With the Bears still expected to trade quarterback Justin Fields and draft Caleb Williams first overall, Sanders indicated that he’s concerned about the cold weather in Chicago.
“Let me tell you something that I have a problem with,” he said in a recent interview on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio (H/T ProFootballTalk.com). “And this kid can flat out play, I think he’s the best one on the board this year for sure. A kid that’s coming from California for the last couple years, right? And went to Oklahoma. That’s not terribly cold.”
“Chicago’s cold, man. You gotta think about that kind of stuff when you’re taking a young man. Like see, when you take a guy from Ohio State and you bring him to Chicago, OK, I could understand that. But from California to Chicago? Not only that, they added what? One or two more games in the NFL. Seventeen games. Come on, man. You gotta factor in that stuff. That stuff matters.”
Well, that is one take.
Unfortunately for Sanders, this really hasn’t proven to be much of a factor.
The Kansas City Chiefs drafted a born and raised Texas kid at quarterback in Patrick Mahomes who does just fine playing in cold weather.
There’s also born and raised California kid Aaron Rodgers who didn’t fare too poorly in Green Bay, Wisconsin with the Packers.
If the Bears aren’t going to draft Williams, it shouldn’t be due to the weather.
