Deion Sanders isn’t one to shy away from acknowledging his favoritism towards certain players on his Colorado team, but he draws the line at letting false narratives tarnish the reputation of the football program in Boulder.
The recent drama unfolded around April when Lil Wayne and YG performed a concert on the Colorado campus, an event that also featured Shedeur Sanders, Deion’s son, performing alongside his older brother Deion Jr. as the opener.

Rumors started swirling shortly thereafter, alleging that Deion Sanders mandated his team’s attendance at Shedeur’s concert.
According to reports that surfaced earlier this month, players who didn’t comply with this supposed directive faced the threat of being kicked off the team. This led to frustration among some players who viewed it as a classic case of “daddy ball,” prompting them to enter the transfer portal in protest.
However, many active players within the Buffaloes vehemently denied these claims, dismissing them as baseless gossip. They hinted at where the rumors might have originated from without naming names, effectively shutting down the speculation.
The Sanders family, including Deion himself, initially addressed the controversy through social media posts. But Deion took it a step further by addressing the issue on camera just this past week during a commercial shoot where he invited some of his players to participate.
It’s a unique move in college football, where very few coaches have the platform to film commercials alongside their players. Sanders has done so repeatedly, sometimes featuring the same players multiple times, inadvertently reinforcing his preference for those who bring dedication and personality to practice. It’s a subtle form of favoritism that, according to Sanders, stems from merit and character rather than nepotism.
Adding a humorous twist to the situation, redshirt junior safety Ben Finneseth joked about his multiple appearances in Sanders’ commercials, humorously attributing his third stint to attending Shedeur’s concert.
Coach Prime seized the opportunity during the shoot to set the record straight on camera for the first time. He addressed the swirling rumors head-on, dismissing them as ridiculous and emphasizing that some things are so far-fetched that all one can do is laugh.
Despite the chatter from former players, Sanders made it clear that there was never any requirement for his team to attend the concert. His response underscores his commitment to maintaining integrity within his program amidst external scrutiny and false reports.
As the narrative settles, Sanders continues to focus on coaching and shaping the future of his players, ensuring that the spotlight remains on their athletic development rather than unfounded controversies.
