Barstool Sports founder and avid bettor Dave Portnoy made headlines last month by declaring his departure from gambling after the Buffalo Bills’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. His resolution, however, proved short-lived, lasting less than a month.
Portnoy’s New Year started on a positive note, as he secured a $1 million win with the Michigan Wolverines’ victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide. Subsequently, he clinched an additional half-million dollars when the Washington Huskies upset the Texas Longhorns, earning a spot in the college football national championship game.

These triumphs marked Portnoy’s return to betting after his self-imposed “retirement” in 2023 following significant losses. A video captured at the Rose Bowl Stadium captured his exuberant reaction upon realizing the success of his bet.
“Holy fing s, I’m a million fing bucks richer. We’re going to fing Houston,” exclaimed Portnoy.
“Listen I’ve had a pretty good run for the past 2 decades,” Portnoy wrote in a blog post at Barstool Sports. “I’ve made hundreds of millions of dollars. Boston sports teams have won like 9,000 titles. Everything has seemingly bounced my way. But my god 2024 is setting up for maybe my best year yet. We’re not even 48 hours into the new year and Michigan has already won the Rose Bowl.”
Reflecting on his recent wins, he acknowledged the Big Ten’s triumph over the SEC, expressing his satisfaction with Michigan’s performance.
In a Barstool Sports blog post, Portnoy shared his excitement for the year ahead, noting the positive turn of events for Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Despite his previous losses, Portnoy’s recent victories have revitalized his betting enthusiasm.
The Wolverines will now face the Huskies at NRG Stadium in Houston on January 8th, and Portnoy, true to his gambling spirit, is expected to test his luck once again during this game.
