The New York Giants made an attempt to trade up for UNC quarterback Drake Maye in last week’s NFL Draft, but their plans were thwarted when the New England Patriots held onto the No. 3 overall pick.
Consequently, the Giants selected LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers with their sixth overall pick, a decision that indirectly impacts quarterback Daniel Jones as he enters his sixth season with the team.
The speculation around the Giants’ interest in Maye has cast some uncertainty on Jones’ long-term future with the team.
Despite the surrounding uncertainties, Jones remains focused on his immediate tasks, particularly his recovery from ACL surgery. “I’m focused on what I can control and that is preparing to play good football. So, getting healthy and I’ll be ready to go,” Jones shared with Dan Duggan of The Athletic at a charity event this week.

Jones’ previous season was marred by injuries, including a neck issue before an ACL tear during a game against the Las Vegas Raiders in November. He assured that he would be ready for training camp this summer.
The Giants’ front office continues to publicly back Jones, with General Manager Joe Schoen affirming post-draft that Jones is still the team’s primary quarterback “as it sits today.”
Nevertheless, NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah hinted at potential changes, suggesting that new free agent signing Drew Lock could challenge Jones for the starting position. “I believe Drew Lock has a really good shot at winning that job… They were comparing Daniel Jones and Drew Lock, emphasis on Drew Lock, to the QBs that were going to be there (at 6) and the line for them was Drake Maye,” Jeremiah commented. This statement suggests that the team’s quarterback dynamics could see significant shifts as the season progresses.
