On Monday, UConn’s men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley confirmed he would not be accepting an offer from the Los Angeles Lakers, opting instead to remain at the University of Connecticut.
Despite a tempting six-year, $70 million contract proposal from the Lakers, Hurley chose to continue his pursuit of a third consecutive national championship with the Huskies in Storrs, Conn.
In a statement released on Monday afternoon, Hurley expressed his commitment to UConn. “I am humbled by this entire experience. At the end of the day, I am extremely proud of the championship culture we have built at Connecticut. We met as a team before today’s workout and our focus right now is getting better this summer and connecting as a team as we continue to pursue championships,” Hurley shared via UConn’s Men’s Basketball account on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Although Hurley entertained a discussion with the Lakers’ management over the weekend and acknowledged their “compelling vision,” he ultimately decided to stay committed to the project he has cultivated in Storrs.
His decision comes on the heels of consecutive national titles, with aspirations to match UCLA’s historic achievement of winning three consecutive national championships.
Following the 2022-23 season, UConn had already secured Hurley with a six-year, $32.1 million extension, significantly less than what he would have earned with the Lakers.
However, his loyalty to UConn could potentially lead to a new contract as he remains with the university.
