Damian Lillard is now contending with a legal battle with his estranged wife, extending beyond the basketball court.
In court documents, it’s revealed that Damian Lillard’s wife is pursuing sole custody of their three children, following Lillard’s divorce filing in Clackamas County on October 2.
The court papers state, “I am the primary caregiver for all three joint children,” court papers state. “It is in the children’s best interests that I be awarded sole custody. I am best positioned to address the ongoing needs of our minor children. I have been responsible for the children’s care since their birth. [Damian Lillard] has never been the sole parent responsible for the care of all three of our children, for any hours-long period of time without the help of nannies, assistants, and/or family members.”

While Kayla Lillard is seeking full custody of the children, the court documents also express her desire for the children to maintain a “healthy relationship” with their father. She underscores her intention to support Damian Lillard’s public image.
“I want the children to have a healthy relationship with their father,” the court papers read. “I understand he is busy and has many commitments he must attend to. I also understand that the brand ‘Damian Lillard’ needs to continue with an image of a family-man. Despite our separation for several months, I have continued to support that image to the public.”
According to the court documents, between the time of their separation in October 2022 and Damian Lillard’s trade to the Milwaukee Bucks in September 2023, the NBA star allegedly spent a few hours with his children each week. Kayla Lillard is now requesting a new parenting plan, as Damian Lillard resides in Milwaukie.
The court declaration seeks the court’s assistance in establishing a parenting plan that serves the best interests of the children. It also asks the court to require Damian Lillard to cover Kayla Lillard’s attorney fees and provide any other relief deemed “just and equitable.”
The Lillards were officially married in September 2021, but they had been together for 12 years prior to their divorce. Here’s hoping they can prioritize their children’s well-being as they move forward.
