As the Buffalo Bills prepare for the NFL playoffs as strong Super Bowl contenders with a 13-3 record, safety Damar Hamlin had another profound reason to celebrate this week. Thursday marked the two-year anniversary of the on-field cardiac arrest that nearly ended his life during a Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Hamlin, now 26, took to social media to reflect on his journey, sharing his gratitude and the lessons he’s learned since that life-altering moment.
A Message of Gratitude and Purpose
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Hamlin expressed appreciation for the support he’s received and reflected on his recovery.
“I wish that everyone was able to experience just an ounce of the amount of love I received,” Hamlin wrote. “The Grace that God displayed… His Mercy & His Faithfulness!! I appreciate every ounce of support, still tryna get back to everybody who checked in. Also enjoying the presence of the ones who was there for me most! 2 years later, still showing I’m here for a real reason.”
Hamlin emphasized the importance of cherishing life and loved ones.
“Life’s a gift—make sure you’re cherishing every second, showing love to the people you love & who love you,” he added. “Never know when it can be that time & that’s real!”

The Incident That Shook the Sports World
Hamlin’s cardiac arrest occurred during a game against the Bengals on January 2, 2023, when he collapsed on the field following a tackle on wide receiver Tee Higgins. Emergency responders quickly rushed to his side, performing CPR and using a defibrillator to restart his heart before transporting him to a nearby hospital for emergency care.
Doctors later diagnosed him with commotio cordis, a rare condition in which a sudden impact to the chest disrupts the heart’s rhythm. The incident brought national attention to the importance of immediate medical intervention, including the role of CPR and defibrillators in saving lives.
“I died on national TV in front of the world,” Hamlin candidly admitted in April 2023. “It’s [commotio cordis] a direct blow at a specific point in your heartbeat that causes cardiac arrest. Five to seven seconds later, you fall out, and that’s pretty much what everyone was seeing January 2 of this year.”
The game was suspended and ultimately not resumed, marking an unprecedented moment in NFL history.
Turning Tragedy Into Advocacy
In the years since his cardiac arrest, Hamlin has used his platform to advocate for emergency medical preparedness. He worked closely with lawmakers to inspire the creation of a congressional bill aimed at improving access to defibrillators in schools and expanding CPR training. The bill was signed into law by President Joe Biden, marking a significant step toward increased safety and awareness in communities nationwide.
Hamlin has also partnered with the American Heart Association to launch a campaign promoting CPR training and awareness, further cementing his role as a leader in public health advocacy.
A Return to the Field and Philanthropy
Remarkably, Hamlin has not only returned to professional football but has also thrived on the field. After rejoining the starting lineup this season, he has continued to grow as a player while inspiring teammates and fans alike with his resilience.
In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Hamlin has embraced philanthropy, raising $9.1 million for a community toy drive and an additional $1 million for non-profit initiatives. He also launched his own foundation to support underserved communities and further his mission of spreading awareness about cardiac health and safety.
Reflecting on His Journey
Hamlin’s Instagram post highlighted the emotional weight of his experience and the divine purpose he feels has guided him.
“I don’t even wanna be talking about it because I get so emotional, and it’s so close to home. I’ve always been a private person, but I know God didn’t want it any other way,” Hamlin shared. “Growing & not only getting back to me but elevating the whole system!”
The safety’s story is a testament to resilience, the power of community support, and the importance of living with purpose. As he prepares to help lead the Bills in their playoff run, Hamlin’s journey serves as a reminder of the fragility and preciousness of life.
From overcoming a near-death experience to becoming a voice for change, Hamlin continues to inspire millions, proving that even in the face of unimaginable challenges, it is possible to rise stronger and make a difference.
