The Dallas Cowboys have yet to make significant headway on a new contract for Dak Prescott, seemingly comfortable with allowing him to play out the remainder of his contract, despite the potential risk of losing him in the next offseason.
With this uncertainty looming, speculation has arisen that the Cowboys may be eyeing a potential successor to Prescott, with the NFL Draft serving as a prime opportunity to secure their future quarterback.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently floated the notion that the Cowboys could emerge as unexpected contenders in the quarterback market during this year’s draft, emphasizing the need to prepare for a potential transition post-Prescott.
Schefter highlighted the precedent set by Prescott’s own selection in the fourth round and suggested that the Cowboys might consider investing in another quarterback prospect to groom for the future.
“What are they going to do at quarterback if they lose Dak?” Schefter said during an April 9 edition of NFL Live on ESPN. “That’s interesting. And, that’s why I think the Dallas Cowboys just might be a sleeper team in the quarterback market in the NFL Draft.
“Because, at some point in time, they might have to draft a quarterback, higher than you’d think, at some point in time, because Dak is going into the last year of the contract, and it might be time to get somebody in there to start grooming. Just like they found Dak Prescott in Round 4, it might be time to go find another quarterback, in another round, to begin getting him ready.”

The team faces a critical deadline, as they have until March 12, 2025, to finalize a contract extension for Prescott. Failure to do so would result in significant salary cap implications, with Prescott potentially becoming a free agent.
Even if Prescott were to sign an extension, financial constraints would still apply due to prior restructuring, necessitating careful consideration of the team’s long-term quarterback strategy.
Currently, Prescott, along with Trey Lance and Cooper Rush, are all entering contract years with the team, underscoring the urgency to address the quarterback position moving forward.
While Prescott boasts undeniable talent, questions linger following the team’s recent playoff disappointments, highlighting the importance of securing a viable replacement to sustain the Cowboys’ status as Super Bowl contenders amidst their existing roster strengths.
