Michael Irvin shared a deeply personal revelation with fans during an event at his new sports bar, Playmakers88, located in The Colony just outside of Dallas.
The Hall of Fame wide receiver and esteemed Cowboys Ring of Honor member announced that his wife of 34 years, Sandy, is battling early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
During a soft opening of his restaurant, Irvin confided in patrons that Sandy has been suffering from the disease for about five to six years.
He described how the illness has progressively made it difficult for her to walk and speak. Determined to keep her comfortable and cared for in their home, Irvin has employed a round-the-clock live-in caretaker. Despite the challenges, he remains steadfast in his commitment to her well-being, emphatically stating to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, “If anyone has earned the right to stay in her house, MY WIFE HAS!!! That I shall honor. No matter what it takes.”
This disclosure adds to what has been a challenging 16 months for Irvin.

In early 2023, he was removed from NFL Network’s Super Bowl LVII coverage following accusations of inappropriate behavior by an employee at a Phoenix hotel.
Irvin contested these claims vigorously, resulting in a defamation lawsuit against the Marriott hotel chain. The dispute was eventually settled, allowing Irvin to return to broadcasting just hours before the start of the 2023 regular season.
Further complications arose in January 2024, when Irvin found himself under criminal investigation by police in Allen, Texas, over undisclosed allegations.
This issue was resolved a few months later when authorities closed the case. However, amidst these legal and public relations battles, NFL Network decided not to renew his contract, ending his 15-year tenure with the broadcaster amid broader organizational changes.
Amid these professional and personal upheavals, Irvin has been focusing on the launch of Playmakers88, a venture that celebrates his career and offers a new beginning in the hospitality industry.
The idea for the sports bar was inspired by nostalgic connections to his previous restaurant ventures, particularly through a chef whose chicken wings were a favorite of Sandy’s. This personal touch helped shape the concept for Playmakers88, leading Irvin to rehire the chef and other former colleagues.
Irvin’s reflection on his current challenges is poignant. “The Bible says, ‘If you suffer with me, you shall reign with me,’” he shared with Clarence Hill Jr. of the Star-Telegram. “Those guys were with me in the hard times. Let me step [in] and try to reciprocate that kind of relationship.”
As Michael and Sandy Irvin approach their 34th wedding anniversary, they face the realities of early-onset Alzheimer’s, a condition affecting a small but significant number of adults under 65. With approximately 0.11% of adults between ages 30 and 64 diagnosed with this form of Alzheimer’s, the journey ahead is uncertain.
While the average life expectancy following symptom onset is around eight years, some live much longer, demonstrating both the unpredictability and the deeply personal impact of the disease.
