This kiss is costly.
French cyclist Julien Bernard was fined 200 Swiss francs (roughly $223) by the International Cycling Union (UCI) for stopping to kiss his wife during the seventh stage of the Tour de France, a time trial, on Friday.
The race was held in Bernard’s hometown of Burgundy, France, and as he rode through a section of the course 15 minutes in, he was met with cheers from the local fans. It was at this point that Bernard briefly veered off the road to greet his wife and young son, sharing a brief kiss with his wife.
The UCI issued a statement saying that Bernard’s behavior was “inappropriate and damaged the image of the sport.”

Following the incident, Bernard issued an apology. “I’m sorry UCI for damaging the image of the sport,” he wrote on X. “But I’m willing to pay 200 Swiss francs every day to experience this moment again.”
In a subsequent television interview, Bernard elaborated on how much the moment meant to him. “It was really incredible,” Bernard said. “My wife had been organizing this with some friends for a few weeks now, and she did an amazing job. On a time trial, you have moments where you can truly appreciate the support around you. It’s these special moments that keep me motivated and passionate about cycling.”
Bernard’s heartfelt act and the resulting fine have sparked a conversation about the balance between professionalism in sports and the human moments that resonate with both athletes and fans.
Despite the penalty, Bernard’s gesture highlighted the personal sacrifices and the emotional support that underpin an athlete’s journey.
