The longstanding rivalry between the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals was brought to the forefront on Jeopardy! when a Chicago fan seized the opportunity to express his disdain for St. Louis, particularly targeting former Cardinals player Albert Pujols.
Dating back to the 1800s, the Cubs-Cardinals rivalry has a rich history, evolving from the days when the teams were known as the White Stockings and the Yellow Stockings, respectively. Having shared a National League division since 1969, the rivalry has become deeply ingrained in baseball lore.
Statistically, the Cubs hold the upper hand in the rivalry, boasting a 1,267–1,214-19 all-time record against the Cardinals in over 2,500 regular-season games between the two teams. Nevertheless, since the turn of the millennium, the Cardinals have had an advantage, highlighted by their overall success with 11 World Series victories—eight more than the Cubs.
Lloyd Sy, a professor of American literature from Illinois and a devoted Cubs fan, had the chance to showcase his team loyalty on Jeopardy! During the Double Jeopardy round in the category “Bald Is Beautiful,” a $1,200 clue featured a picture of the former St. Louis slugger, Albert Pujols. Lloyd promptly identified Pujols and expressed his sentiment, answering, “Who is the wretched Albert Pujols?” He then cheekily added a “Go Cubs” before choosing the next clue.

Despite his apparent disdain for Pujols, Lloyd owes the former Cardinals player a bit of gratitude, as his successful Jeopardy! appearance resulted in him securing a victory and walking away with $25,200 in winnings.
