The designer behind the iconic New York Jets logo, Jim Pons, has initiated legal action against the football team following their reveal of redesigned uniforms in April, which prominently feature a vintage logo crafted by Pons back in 1978.
Despite the team’s acknowledgment of Pons’s contribution when they reintroduced the logo, the designer has decided to pursue compensation.
According to reports from TMZ, Pons is seeking financial remuneration for the team’s use of his design, which cleverly integrates a stylized capital “J” that subtly incorporates an airplane motif, reflecting the team’s name and aviation theme. This design choice has been a significant part of the team’s identity, resonating with fans and the broader NFL community for decades.

In response to the lawsuit, the Jets have expressed their position through a statement to the New York Post, highlighting the longstanding registration of the logo with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. “The mark in question has been registered for nearly 50 years and has been used continuously in numerous iterations since that time,” the team stated, asserting, “We find this claim baseless and without merit.”
The historical context of the logo adds depth to the dispute. Pons originally submitted his logo design in 1978, which the Jets then adopted and featured on their uniforms until 1997.
After a period with an alternate logo, the Jets decided to reintroduce Pons’s design in 2022, now using it as their primary emblem on a full-time basis.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the outcome remains uncertain, leaving both the sports and design communities watching closely to see if Pons will eventually secure the compensation he seeks for his enduring contribution to the Jets’ visual identity.
