The Big D is about to get a bit smaller.
Dallas Cowboys’ standout cornerback, Trevon Diggs, has sustained a torn ACL in his left knee, according to sources disclosed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Diggs suffered this unfortunate injury during a 1-on-1 drill in practice on Thursday and was briefly seen inside The Star, the Cowboys’ facility, using crutches, ESPN’s sources further indicated.
In training camp, Diggs inked a lucrative five-year, $97 million contract extension with the Cowboys. This deal encompassed a substantial $21.25 million signing bonus and $42.3 million guaranteed. After missing four games due to a foot injury in 2020, Diggs had only missed one game in each of the past two seasons.

In the initial two games of the current season, Diggs, a Pro Bowl selection for the past two years, made notable contributions, including forcing a fumble, intercepting a pass, registering three pass breakups, and being credited with six tackles. He has played a pivotal role in anchoring the Cowboys’ defense, currently ranked as the top defense in terms of yards and points per game.
If Diggs is sidelined due to this injury, the Cowboys have contingency plans in place. They can deploy DaRon Bland as an outside cornerback opposite Stephon Gilmore, with Jourdan Lewis stepping in as a slot cornerback. Last week, Lewis made his return to the field after recovering from a significant foot injury sustained last October, seeing action for ten snaps. Bland, who led the Cowboys with five interceptions last season and also returned an interception for a touchdown in the season opener against the New York Giants, provides valuable depth.
Furthermore, the Cowboys have Noah Igbinoghene, a former first-round pick of the Miami Dolphins acquired in a trade earlier this month, and rookie Eric Scott at cornerback. Nahshon Wright, currently on injured reserve due to an ankle injury, is eligible to return to game action in Week 5.
