Jim Harbaugh is making a return to the NFL, this time as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Chargers shared the news on X, stating, “Ladies and gentlemen, we got him,” in a post on Wednesday. This development follows a highly successful season where Harbaugh guided the University of Michigan to its first national championship since 1997, concluding his nine-year tenure as the Wolverines’ head coach.
Chargers owner and chairman Dean Spanos expressed his confidence in Harbaugh, stating, “Jim Harbaugh is football personified, and I can think of no one better to lead the Chargers forward.” The statement highlighted Harbaugh’s deep football roots, being the son, brother, and father of coaches, and emphasized his track record of leading men to success throughout his coaching career.
Harbaugh’s return to the Chargers marks a significant moment, with the statement echoing the familiar refrain, “Who has it better than us?”
While Harbaugh’s final season with Michigan had its share of drama, including a suspension for half of the regular season due to two separate investigations, the announcement of his move to the Chargers sparked speculation about potential additions to the coaching staff. Former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions trended on social media, as some believe Harbaugh might consider bringing him onto the Chargers’ coaching team.

In his concluding season with Michigan, Harbaugh faced a suspension for the last three games of the regular season by the Big 10 conference, stemming from his involvement in a sign-stealing scandal. This followed his earlier suspension for the first three games, as he accepted the university’s decision related to accusations of making false statements to NCAA investigators probing recruiting violations during the coronavirus pandemic.
