The San Francisco 49ers had previously shared a sense of optimism that star running back Christian McCaffrey would soon ramp up his rehabilitation process. However, a recent report has reignited concerns about whether McCaffrey will be able to take the field at all during the 2024 season.
In a recent episode of the “49ers Talk” podcast, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area delved into the latest details of McCaffrey’s injury. While initial reports suggested McCaffrey was battling a single Achilles issue, Maiocco revealed that the reality is more troubling. McCaffrey is actually suffering from bilateral Achilles tendonitis—meaning inflammation in both Achilles tendons.
This revelation is certainly not a surprise to the 49ers’ medical team, but it adds another layer of uncertainty for fans hoping to see McCaffrey return soon. Achilles tendonitis can be notoriously tricky to manage, and having it affect both legs could complicate the recovery process even further.

Last week, McCaffrey traveled to Germany to consult with a specialist about his condition. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the overseas visit was productive, and the 49ers are cautiously optimistic that McCaffrey could return in about a month. However, the team has refrained from putting a specific timeline on his comeback, signaling that they are unsure of exactly when McCaffrey will be ready to play again.
Although McCaffrey is eligible to come off injured reserve in Week 6, it seems highly unlikely he will be ready by then, and his absence may extend well beyond that point.
In the meantime, the 49ers have relied on third-year running back Jordan Mason, who has stepped up in McCaffrey’s absence. Mason had an impressive performance in San Francisco’s 30-13 victory over the New England Patriots, rushing for 123 yards and a touchdown.
Mason’s strong season, with 447 rushing yards, places him second in the league behind only Derrick Henry, giving the 49ers some much-needed stability while McCaffrey continues his recovery journey.
For now, the 49ers and their fans remain in a holding pattern, hoping that McCaffrey’s rehabilitation progresses and that his return to the field comes sooner rather than later.
