During Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals series between the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves, TNT’s commentary team and fans alike were outraged after Anthony Edwards received a technical foul for simply staring at an opponent.
The incident occurred in the third quarter when Edwards, the Timberwolves’ rising star, was called for a technical foul after making a layup and then staring down Denver’s Reggie Jackson.
The call sparked immediate criticism from former NBA player Reggie Miller in the commentary booth. “That’s just a look,” Miller exclaimed. “Come on, that’s a bad technical.”
“Man, we’re in the second round of the playoffs,” Miller added. “Emotions are always gonna be high.”
Jamal Crawford and Kevin Harlan also echoed Miller’s sentiments, emphasizing how “awful” the call was.
Fans took to social media to express their frustration, with one user commenting, “That’s actually sad af,” while another called the NBA “incredibly soft.”
“Fire ref instantly,” suggested another fan. “Anthony Edwards went on a 7-0 run by himself to have momentum killed w that. Can’t have it.”

Despite the controversial call, Edwards had a standout performance, tallying 43 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks to lead the Timberwolves to a 1-0 lead over the defending champions. This victory marked the Timberwolves’ fifth consecutive win in the playoffs after sweeping the Phoenix Suns in the first round.
Edwards’ remarkable performance also earned him a spot alongside Kobe Bryant as the only players with consecutive 40-point postseason performances at 22 or younger.
Reflecting on the game, Edwards expressed his excitement about facing Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets, praising their coaching and discipline. He emphasized the collective effort of the Timberwolves team in securing the win.
While Edwards shone brightly, Jokic nearly recorded a triple-double with 32 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists. Michael Porter Jr. and Jamal Murray also contributed with 20 and 17 points, respectively.
As the series progresses, all eyes will be on Edwards and the Timberwolves as they aim to maintain their momentum in Game 2.
