The Washington Commanders are still grappling with a decision regarding the second pick of the NFL Draft, and interest from other teams seeking to trade for this coveted selection is mounting.
NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, reporting for ESPN, highlighted the Commanders’ dilemma on Saturday. The team faces the choice of either drafting a quarterback or leveraging the pick to amass additional draft assets. Under new coach Dan Quinn, Washington is in need of a roster overhaul.
Fowler provided insights into the Commanders’ stance, stating, “They have been unpredictable, and I’ve talked to a team source who said they are still open with a thorough process. They have not made a firm determination on which direction they’re going.” With the expectation that Chicago will likely pick Caleb Williams first overall, Washington remains flexible, sending a contingent to the Pro Days of quarterbacks Jayden Daniels at LSU and Drake Maye at UNC for further evaluation.

Despite receiving trade inquiries for the No. 2 pick, the prevailing sentiment around the league suggests that Washington may ultimately opt for one of these highly touted quarterbacks. Daniels is slated for his Pro Day on Wednesday, followed by Maye a day later. Notably, all four quarterbacks, including Williams and J.J. McCarthy, are anticipated to be early selections in the draft.
The Commanders’ urgent need for a quarterback was evidenced by their recent trade of Sam Howell to the Seahawks and the signing of Marcus Mariota as a backup, leaving Jake Fromm as the only other quarterback on the roster.
While other teams outside the top 10 also seek quarterback upgrades, the cost of trading up to the No. 2 spot is steep. The Vikings and Broncos are reportedly interested in making moves, with the Vikings potentially offering both their first-round picks, Nos. 11 and 23, along with other selections. Additionally, the Cardinals and Chargers, picking at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, have signaled openness to trading down.
With the NFL Draft scheduled for April 25-27, both the Bears and Commanders find themselves at the center of attention and on the clock as they navigate their draft strategies.
