“It’s mayo time!” echoed proudly among fans at the Duke’s Mayo Bowl as they enthusiastically downed substantial squirts of the condiment before the clash between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the West Virginia Mountaineers on Wednesday.
The mayo shots were a result of Duke’s Mayonnaise being the game’s title sponsor. The Duke’s Mayo Bowl’s Instagram account shared a compilation of fans chanting the phrase before indulging in the creamy sauce, capturing the mayo-themed festivities at a fan fest near the Bank of America Stadium in N.C.

Despite the West Virginia Mountaineers emerging victorious with a 30-10 win over the Tar Heels, both teams’ supporters seemed in high spirits, enjoying mayo-themed snacks curated for the occasion.
The Duke’s Mayo Bowl’s Twitter account retweeted and shared various game day moments, including two fans on the field dipping what looked like French fries into a container of mayo during an interview with an ESPN reporter. Another scene showed a stadium attendee eating mayo from a jar with a spoon, resembling an ice cream indulgence.
The Jumbotron featured the recipe for a unique concoction named the “Mayo Mocktail,” comprising 2 ounces of Duke’s Mayo, 9 ounces of eggnog, 3 ounces of simple syrup, a dash of nutmeg and cinnamon, and a cup of ice. Fans from each team were seen on a split screen behind a table, ready to mix the ingredients.
Even the announcers, Matt Barrie and Dan Mullen, joined in on the mayo mania during pre-game analysis, trying out mayo-covered nachos with some hesitation.
As part of the celebration tradition, just before West Virginia’s coach Neal Brown was doused in gallons of mayo to mark his team’s victory, the Duke’s Mayo Bowl’s Twitter account exclaimed, “MAYO DUMP. SOON.” Brown, the third college football coach to receive this unique honor, embraced the mayo shower, stating, “I feel cold. I feel wet. But I feel like a winner.” This tradition started when South Carolina Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer received the mayo shower in December 2021.
Celebrating victories appears enjoyable, but consuming mayo in large quantities does not share the same appeal.
