During last night’s rivalry game between Texas Tech and Texas, the fervor of Texas Tech fans reached a boiling point.
As the visiting Longhorns maintained a 25-point lead midway through the second half, a hard foul committed by Texas forward Brock Cunningham ignited the passion of the rowdy crowd at United Supermarkets Arena.
Amidst the chaos, with officials reviewing the contentious play, spectators began hurling debris onto the court. Security swiftly intervened, escorting one unruly student out of the arena.

In response to the escalating situation, Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland took to the public address microphone to appeal for calm.
“We all know what’s at stake in this game,” McCasland said after the game, via the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. “There’s a lot going on. There’s a lot of passion in this game. When you have to go talk on the mic, you’re talking to 15-plus-thousand people but really you’re talking to a couple people that are doing things that are completely unacceptable. You could tell when I finally communicated clearly, like, this can’t happen, a lot of people were applauding because they know it’s not what we need to do and it cost us technicals and it caused us a problem.
“But you know what comes with this great place is there’s a lot of passion, and unfortunately I thought the decisions of a few people impacted everybody and that’s not what this is about, and we’ll get better because of it.”
Despite the commotion, Texas emerged victorious with a score of 81-69, improving their season record to 18-10, while Texas Tech’s record dipped to 19-9.
