Detroit Lions safety CJ Gardner-Johnson experienced a moment of premature celebration on Sunday, and it came back to haunt him after his team’s 34-31 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
In the first half, the Lions were in control, leading 21-7 after taking advantage of a San Francisco turnover. Gardner-Johnson’s teammate, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, scored a 15-yard rushing touchdown on 1st-and-10 at the 49ers’ 15-yard line.
However, Gardner-Johnson celebrated the score by waving goodbye to the 49ers’ home crowd before the extra point was converted by Lions kicker Michael Badgley.

Following Gardner-Johnson’s premature celebration, the momentum shifted, and the 49ers took control of the game, outscoring the Lions 27-10 in the second half. The Niners’ explosive offense came alive, securing a Super Bowl appearance and ending the Lions’ season.
Gardner-Johnson, who finished the game with four tackles, became the subject of jokes on social media. One of the memorable moments was when he was stiff-armed by 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey shortly before his untimely wave goodbye.
While the Lions’ season can be considered a success, the questionable decision-making during the game, including Gardner-Johnson’s premature celebration, and head coach Dan Campbell’s choices may linger as the team reflects on its missed opportunity to reach the Super Bowl after decades of playoff challenges.
