Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy may be making a Christmas donation to the NFL’s league office after his touchdown celebration during the team’s Christmas Day game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Worthy opened the scoring with a seven-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the first quarter. While celebrating his touchdown, Worthy initially performed a Christmas-themed celebration, which was a festive nod to the holiday season.
However, he ended the celebration by lifting up his jersey and simulating the action of pulling an imaginary gun from his waistband, a gesture that caught the attention of the officials.
As a result of this gun-themed celebration, Worthy was hit with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which was assessed between the next set of downs.

NFL’s Strict Stance on Gun-Themed Celebrations
The NFL has been consistent in penalizing players for any form of gun-related gestures during celebrations, making it clear that such actions violate the league’s code of conduct. As a result, it’s highly likely that Worthy will face a fine for the gesture in the coming days.
Interestingly, even some of the league’s biggest stars, including Worthy’s teammate Patrick Mahomes, have been penalized this season for similar actions. Despite Mahomes’ superstar status, his own attempts at gun-related celebrations were also flagged, further emphasizing the league’s zero-tolerance policy on the matter.
A Lesson for Players
While Worthy’s celebration might have seemed playful in the moment, it serves as a reminder to players about the importance of being mindful of their celebrations. The NFL has made it clear that while players are encouraged to express their personalities on the field, certain gestures—especially those associated with violence or guns—will not be tolerated.
As the season continues, players will need to be cautious when choosing how to celebrate their big moments, as the league will continue to enforce penalties for celebrations that cross the line.
For now, Worthy’s Christmas celebration has cost him 15 yards and, likely, a fine—but it’s a lesson he—and other players—will undoubtedly take into account for future celebrations.
