Ahead of the WNBA season tipoff on Tuesday evening, teams have been trimming their rosters to meet the league-required 12-player limit.
The Chicago Sky, having secured three top draft picks in the 2024 WNBA Draft, made headlines with their selections: Angel Reese from LSU, Kamilla Cardoso from South Carolina, and Brynna Maxwell from Gonzaga, all chosen within the top 13 picks.
However, as the roster finalization loomed, only two of these promising picks made the cut.
On Monday, the Sky made the tough decision to waive Brynna Maxwell, the No. 13 overall pick in the draft.
The announcement came just before the season opener, underlining the intense competition for roster spots in the WNBA, where opportunities are limited due to fewer teams compared to the NBA.
While Maxwell’s journey with the Sky has come to an end for now, there’s still hope for her to find a place in the league before the regular season begins on Tuesday evening.
The Chicago Sky are gearing up to kick off their 2024 campaign on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET, facing off against the Dallas Wings.
Maxwell played three seasons for the Utah Utes and two seasons for the Gonzaga Bulldogs while in college.
In 2023-24, Maxwell helped Gonzaga to a 32-4 record which was their best performance in team history.
