Cubs manager Craig Counsell was visibly displeased with ESPN reporter Jesse Rogers’ remarks about Christopher Morel’s at-bat during Sunday’s game. In the seventh inning, with the Cubs trailing the Diamondbacks by one run and the tying run in scoring position, Morel struck out. The Cubs later rallied to win 2-1 in 10 innings.
Rogers confronted Counsell about Morel’s approach at the plate, suggesting that the third baseman was overly aggressive. “Earlier in the game, some of the at-bats… In the seventh inning with Morel, there is a tying run at second. It looked like he was swinging for the lake there,” Rogers commented. “What do you think about some of those at-bats?”
Counsell, clearly unimpressed with Rogers’ characterization, responded, “Come on Jesse… Come on. That’s your comment? I think that’s a bad take. I think that’s a bad take. He’s swinging for the lake? That’s a bad take.”
Rogers pressed Counsell to explain why he disagreed with his assessment. “He’s having a good at-bat trying to hit the ball hard,” Counsell clarified. “It didn’t work. The pitcher made a good pitch. He made an out.”

Morel has faced challenges this season with the Cubs, who currently hold a disappointing 48-53 record.
After leading the team in home runs last season, expectations were high for Morel to be a key offensive contributor. However, his performance has declined, with notable drops in OPS, slugging, and hard-hit percentage.
Despite these struggles, Morel has shown some improvement in his strikeout rate, which was among the worst for starters last year. This season, he has managed to bring it down slightly.
Morel’s struggles are indicative of the broader issues facing the Cubs this season. The team was anticipated to be a rising contender following an 83-79 season. The surprise firing of David Ross and the hiring of the highly regarded Counsell from the rival Brewers were moves meant to bolster the team’s prospects. However, the Cubs find themselves in fourth place in the NL Central, 10 games behind the leading Brewers.
With the trade deadline approaching, the Cubs’ strategy will be closely watched. Chicago may look to make significant changes, similar to their division rivals, the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds, currently half a game behind the Cubs and in last place in the NL Central, have reportedly indicated their intention to trade players on expiring contracts.
Counsell’s defense of Morel highlights his commitment to his players amidst a challenging season. As the Cubs navigate their struggles and consider their options at the trade deadline, the focus remains on improving performance and striving for a better second half of the season.
