During the Chicago Bears’ third voluntary practice of organized team activities on Thursday, which was open to the media, it became evident that the defense is ahead of the offense at this early stage of the offseason.
This isn’t surprising, considering the defense is entering its third year under Matt Eberflus, while the offense is still adapting to Shane Waldron’s new scheme.
Veteran safety Kevin Byard noted the offense’s strong performance on the first day, particularly highlighting Caleb Williams’ impressive throws and deep passes.

However, on Thursday, the defense showed its prowess by putting pressure on the offense.
Despite the defense’s early success, it’s essential not to overreact to unpadded practices in May.
The offense faced challenges with the absence of key players like wide receivers Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze, as well as offensive linemen Darnell Wright and Nate Davis.
Consequently, there were numerous incomplete passes and red-zone inefficiencies during team drills.
Nonetheless, it’s a promising start for Eberflus’ defense as they aim to build upon their strong performance in the latter part of the 2023 season.
