Charles Barkley, Pro Basketball Hall of Famer and current Inside the NBA analyst, has expressed his interest in mentoring New Orleans Pelicans’ player Zion Williamson on losing weight and maintaining his fitness.
Barkley shared on his podcast, “The Steam Room,” that he needs someone to urge him to stay in shape. He said that he would “love” to be the one guiding Williamson.
During the podcast, Barkley stated that neither the coach nor David Griffin, a friend of his and the Pelicans’ executive vice president, hold enough authority to push Williamson to stay in shape.
“We’ve never met. You gotta get somebody in your ear,” Barkley said . “I don’t think the coach has enough power to tell you what to do. I don’t think David Griffin, who’s a friend of mine, has enough power to tell you what to do. But somebody gotta tell you like, ‘Yo, man, you gotta get in shape.’ Cause you’re gonna keep getting hurt if you’re out of shape.”
Ernie Johnson, Barkley’s co-host, then asked if Barkley would mentor Williamson in a similar way that Malone did for him. Barkley responded positiely to this.
Though Barkley may be known for his outspoken nature, he is also very genuine. His dedication to helping Williamson is evident.
Williamson has been out for over half of his career due to injuries, despite being an All-Star player. He has averaged 25.8 PPG, 7 RPG, and 3.6 APG in the games he’s played.
Zion needs to prove to NBA fans that he can stay healthy, or else it’s tough to give a damn about him.
