January 1st signifies an intriguing moment in American culture. Beyond the universal celebration of another orbit around the sun, it’s a time when many people commit to New Year’s resolutions, even NBA legends like Charles Barkley.
Not all resolutions are created equal; some are more challenging than others and, consequently, are often abandoned within a few months, weeks, or even days.
In Barkley’s case, his resolution was refreshingly simple—he pledged to give up Diet Coke for the entire year. While this might seem like an easy switch for most, considering Diet Coke’s ubiquity in the soda world, Barkley had been indulging in the sugary beverage for years. To support his commitment, his Inside the NBA co-hosts decided to assist him during their Thursday night broadcast.
Following the Milwaukee Bucks-San Antonio Spurs game, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson joined forces to eliminate any temptation for Barkley by playfully engaging with the remaining Diet Coke on set. The result was a humorous exchange.

As the crew jokingly enjoyed some Diet Coke, a disheartened Barkley couldn’t help but ask, “Don’t y’all feel my pain? Ain’t it good?”
Thanks to the camaraderie of his friends, Barkley is now six days into his resolution, with 359 more to go.
