As expected, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh is being connected to an NFL coaching position opening this winter.
According to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, the Chargers have expressed interest in having Harbaugh as their next head coach.
“It’s unclear if the feeling is mutual, as Harbaugh gets set to coach the Wolverines in their third consecutive College Football Playoff appearance,” Schultz added.
The Chargers dismissed Brandon Staley following a disappointing loss to the Raiders on “Thursday Night Football.” Team owner Dean Spanos emphasized last Friday that he’s not willing to settle for mediocrity.
“We are clearly not where we expect to be; however, we need new vision. Doing nothing in the name of continuity was not a risk I was willing to take,” Spanos said. “Our fans have stood strong though so many ups and downs and close games. They deserve more. Frankly, they’ve earned more. Building and maintaining a championship-caliber program remains our ultimate goal. And reimagining how we achieve that goal begins today.”

It’s noteworthy that Harbaugh reportedly holds a high regard for Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.
“We just got into a conversation. This had nothing to do with anything, in no way were we talking about him leaving Michigan. We were just talking about quarterback play, and he was raving about Justin Herbert,” shared ESPN’s Mike Greenberg.
While it would make sense for Harbaugh to consider the Chargers job if he decides to leave Michigan, he currently enjoys a favorable position in the college football world. If he secures the National Championship this season, it becomes less likely that he would make the leap back to the NFL.
