Cameron Brink’s Los Angeles Sparks suffered an 87-68 loss to the Phoenix Mercury, but the rookie received valuable advice from WNBA legend Diana Taurasi during Sunday’s game.
In a Zoom interview with CBS Sports’ Isabel Gonzalez on Monday, Brink recounted her encounter with the WNBA’s all-time scoring leader.
“Diana Taurasi came to me at the free-throw line and said, ‘You know, you’re going to be dealing with this crap for 20 more years.’ I thought, ‘Oh my god. Not with the way I’m playing now,'” Brink recalled. Taurasi added, “Just give yourself grace.”
Brink finished the game with six points and five fouls in 26 minutes, while the 41-year-old Taurasi scored a game-high 31 points, including seven three-pointers.

Despite some early struggles for the 2-6 Sparks, the 6-foot-4 forward has shown significant potential.
Through eight games, the No. 2 pick is averaging 8.8 points with a 47.2 field-goal percentage.
On May 26, she scored a career-high 21 points in a one-point loss to the Dallas Wings.
Brink has also made a strong defensive impact, averaging 5.4 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game.
Although she remains 530 games behind Taurasi, who joined the Mercury when Brink was just two years old, she understands that success takes time and is committed to growing throughout her first professional season.
“It’s all about growing and learning through adversity,” Brink said. “We’re all rookies at one point in our lives.”
