Former NFL star quarterback Cam Newton shared how a harrowing car accident profoundly influenced his outlook on life.
Back in 2014, the quarterback endured a fractured back after a collision in Charlotte that caused his vehicle to flip multiple times, leading to his hospitalization.
Newton recalled the moment on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast.
He said he was driving an elevated truck that was “too high” when he and another car simultaneously sped up at an intersection.
“As I’m flipping, I’m saying to myself, ‘Oh my God, not like this, not like this.’ You don’t know the time, hour or day. … ‘My father would always say, ‘Son, be careful. One day you could be on top of the world and the next day the world could be on top of you.’”
This reminded him of a lesson his father taught him.
“My father would always say, ‘Son, be careful. One day you could be on top of the world, and the next day the world could be on top of you. Do right by people.’ And no matter what you say about Cam Newton, you can never find a person that I did wrong.”
Newton made a full recovery and a year later he would go on to win NFL MVP.
The 34-year-old is not officially retired but hasn’t played in the NFL since 2021 when he played for the Carolina Panthers.
