Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton faced criticism this week for labeling current quarterbacks Brock Purdy and Dak Prescott as “game managers” on his podcast. In response to the backlash, Newton clarified his comments in a social media post.
“Over the last 24 hours, there has been a lot of people who have had a lot to say about the comments I made on my sports show,” Newton stated. “Some are true. Some are not so true. Some of it is objective. All of it is still opinionated at the end of the day. The thing that I have a problem with is addressing the point I made, not me.”

He proceeded to share clips of sports media personalities discussing his comments and emphasized that the term “game manager” was not meant as a negative connotation. Newton clarified that, in his view, a game manager is a player with the ability to make the right play at the right time while prioritizing ball protection.
Newton provided examples of what he considers elite game managers, citing Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Tom Brady. He also listed individuals he sees as game changers in the NFL, including Aaron Rodgers, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Patrick Mahomes.
The controversy arose as some criticized Newton for potentially using hot takes to generate attention for his podcast, but he maintained that the focus should be on discussing the point he made rather than scrutinizing him.
