Is it time for Caleb Williams to call it a season?
Caleb Williams’ Heisman aspirations have hit a rough patch in the first eight games of the season. USC has suffered two losses, effectively eliminating them from College Football Playoff contention, with upcoming games against Washington and Oregon. Even their six wins haven’t been easy.
Colorado staged a significant comeback in the second half, and USC only won by seven points. They narrowly escaped with a two-point victory over Arizona in overtime.
USC’s record could easily be 4-4, yet they have two losses.
Caleb Williams has had back-to-back weeks of subpar performance, perhaps the worst of his career. He threw three interceptions against Notre Dame and failed to score against Utah.
Many issues are beyond Williams’ control. USC’s offensive line has struggled, the defense is porous, and the play-calling on both sides of the ball has been questionable.

However, that doesn’t absolve Williams, who is expected to be the top overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. His performances in the two losses were far from acceptable.
There is talk of Williams potentially sitting out the rest of the college football season to prepare for the NFL. Emmanuel Acho even suggested it might be a wise move.
It would be a bold move for Williams to skip the next four regular-season games and potentially the postseason. It might not sit well with NFL front offices, but Williams is so talented that he would still likely be a first-round pick.
While Williams didn’t directly address the idea of sitting out the remainder of the regular season, he was asked about USC’s approach to the upcoming games. His response suggested a commitment to finishing the season.
Of course, circumstances can change, but it appears unlikely, especially after his statement prior to Saturday’s game at UC Berkeley. At this point, he needs to put together several strong performances to restore his draft stock.
