Caleb Williams was once considered a guaranteed #1 pick, and some even placed him among the top ten quarterbacks if he were in the NFL. However, that certainty has now wavered.
USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams had been viewed as the undisputed top choice in the 2024 NFL Draft. Nevertheless, as one ESPN insider suggests, it’s no longer an absolute certainty.
Williams encountered a challenging game, throwing three interceptions during a substantial loss to Notre Dame on Saturday evening. This has prompted some to consider North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye as a potential #1 pick.

According to ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky, the debate has become serious.
““I’m a huge Drake Maye fan,” Orlovsky said. “I think right now I still take Caleb Williams. That’s without studying these guys in and out over into the spring — right now I’d take Caleb. I’ve called a couple of Drake Maye’s games — I will not be alone in thinking he is going to be in the conversation for the No. 1 pick, I promise you that. He’s got a lot of Big Ben [Roethlisberger] in his game. Big, athletic, powerful dude, still sloppy mechanically a little bit but great vision, great feel, throws a beautiful different level layered football. He’s awesome.
“I think he’s a superstar in the NFL.”
Nonetheless, it’s important to acknowledge that Williams’ struggles aren’t solely his responsibility; he’s dealing with a rather unreliable offensive line.
While there are several months left in the 2023 college football season, the identity of the #1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft currently appears uncertain. Forming a judgment on Williams based on one game would be hasty; a more comprehensive evaluation of his overall performance is warranted.
