Caleb Williams, the former USC quarterback, is among the participants at this week’s NFL Scouting Combine, but he’s opted out of a significant aspect of the event.
According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, Williams has chosen not to undergo medical examinations with teams, making him the first combine attendee to do so. He’s also declined to authorize the sharing of his medical records with all 32 teams.
Criticism of the time-consuming nature and redundancy of these medical exams has led some draft prospects to forego them. Instead, Williams intends to complete medical evaluations with teams individually during the pre-draft process.
Despite his absence from certain combine activities, Williams is expected to meet with several NFL teams during his time in Indianapolis, including the Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders, Las Vegas Raiders, Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots, New York Jets, and New York Giants.

While his decision not to participate in certain combine activities, including throwing, may raise eyebrows, it’s not unusual for top quarterback prospects. LSU’s Jayden Daniels, the 2023 Heisman winner, is also abstaining from throwing at the combine.
Williams has already demonstrated his throwing prowess during his time at USC, where he completed 68.6 percent of his passes for 3,633 yards and 30 touchdowns with just five interceptions in the 2023 season. He also rushed for 142 yards and 11 scores. Notably, Williams has chosen not to retain an agent ahead of the draft.
Despite being widely considered the top quarterback prospect in this year’s draft, some scouting departments, like Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department, rank him second behind former UNC standout Drake Maye.
