As a potential frontrunner for the top pick in this year’s draft, Caleb Williams has already earned lofty comparisons, drawing parallels to Patrick Mahomes before even stepping onto an NFL field.
Some analysts have assertively likened the USC quarterback’s skills to those of the Kansas City Chiefs’ star.
In a conversation with CBS Sports, Williams expressed his appreciation for being mentioned alongside Mahomes, considering it “really cool.” Far from shying away from the high expectations, he embraces the elevated standard.
“Everybody watches Patrick and sees all the cool things he can do,” Williams remarked. “I always said, even in high school, that I don’t think there’s anything — obviously, it’s special, but I don’t think there’s anything that I can’t do that he’s doing out there.”

Williams has been compared to Mahomes for his powerful arm, athleticism, and improvisational abilities, with many scouts identifying the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner as a generational talent.
Addressing the Mahomes comparisons during the summer, Williams adopted a grounded perspective, stating, “The Patrick Mahomes thing, I’ve seen it. I don’t think anything of it. I’m my own self. I’m Caleb Williams, No. 13 for the USC Trojans,” as he shared with Kevin Clark in July. “I don’t think too much of it other than, it’s respect. Mahomes has been the best guy in the league basically since he got in the league.”
Given the Chicago Bears’ history of selecting Mitchell Trubisky over Mahomes in 2017, there might be sensitivity surrounding Mahomes’ name.
Now faced with the decision of whether to use the No. 1 pick on a new franchise quarterback or stick with Justin Fields, the buzz surrounding Williams could intensify the pressure for the Bears to avoid passing on another potential star quarterback.
